The daily headlines referring to a ‘Global Food Crisis” in our current news emphasizes the need to help our youth know about their world and to provide a means for them to help the hungry. Through the Rice Raiser, students awareness of hunger is increasing. As they join forces, they are able to experience the power of changing hunger for many people. In some cases the food provides relief and other times the funds help with sustainability. Not only are they giving food, but the gift of hope as well.

The Rice Raiser has two goals: The first is obviously to see the state of hunger changed and enough food for everyone. The other goal is to raise awareness about global hunger and instill seeds of compassion in our youth so that they will care for others in need now and in the future. The comments that came back from the participating students makes it clear that they are concerned about people who suffer from hunger and are ready to work towards change now.
Comment from a high school student
I for one know what it is like to feel hunger. I was raised by a single mother and many times my brother and I did not have enough food to eat. My mom went without the most.
If it can be this bad here in Canada, one of the richest countries in the world, imagine what it must be like in developing countries where there is no help.

The Rice Raiser has been growing and generating a lot of support. We are grateful to everyone who has expressed their interest in changing the situation of hunger in our own communities and around the world. This year, we are working with Hungry for Life International, Mennonite Central Committee BC and CAUSE Canada to focus on the problem of hunger in four countries: Indonesia, Honduras, Zambia and Haiti.

We have 15 teachers signed up with their classes. We have divided them into three groups. Sciences, Fine Arts/Languages and Humanities. The challenge is on.
The group of 10 teachers that lose will have to provide and serve a full course lunch to the winning 5. We have daily draws for prizes for students who bring in 2kg of rice. Key Club students are taking shifts at Save-on-Foods to up-sell bags of rice and encourage customers to donate their Save-on-More points which the store will then match the value of.

The Rice Raiser 2006 has been a great campaign! This first year, the focus was primarily in Abbotsford, where nine schools participated. In addition to that, three schools from the Vancouver area and a school from Langley contributed!
“What a wonderful response to a first year campaign.” says Director, Lorri Sawatsky “This demonstrates the concern many people have over global hunger and how eager they are to help make change happen. This year’s response is a fantastic foundation upon which we can build as we endeavour to see the Rice Raiser develop into a nation wide campaign that involves Canadians throughout the country. Thank you to each person who contributed.”
